HOW BIG?

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said late Thursday that the wildfires were “likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history.”

At least 55 people have died and the governor said the scale of the disaster was likely to surpass a 1960 tsunami that claimed 61 lives.

Both state officials and insurance experts have said the economic losses are likely to reach into the billions of dollars.

The U.S. already saw a record of 15 weather and climate disasters that cost at least a $1 billion each over the first seven months of the year. 

Over 1,000 buildings destroyed, hundreds displaced. Death toll at 55, expected to rise.

The spreading flames have destroyed numerous homes, historic buildings and businesses on the major tourist strip of Front Street in the town of Lahaina on the western side of Maui. “About 80% of Lahaina is gone,” Green said on Thursday, according to CNN.

One of the many casualties of the wildfires was an institution: Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, the oldest continuously operating hotel in Hawaii. Best Western Hotels confirmed in a statement Wednesday that the property was destroyed, media reported. Lee Anne Wong, the executive chef at the hotel’s restaurant Papa’aina, was in shock over the news

Rescue operation

President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster for Hawaii, the National Guard has been deployed, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is working on the ground to distribute supplies.
